Wouldn't I just ring insurance company when done and tell them what I've done and swap it over?

I doubt it will be as simple as that, your going to insuring a 1.4 that has been converted to a 1.8t, they will I suspect ask for an engineers report stating the standard of work that has been carried out.

You might be best asking them first as to do all the work and then find the insurance company start to play silly games would not be clever.

Does this not get done thousands of times a year though, people sticking more powerful lumps in?

Haven't heard of an engineers report before   :embarassed:

It makes sence insurance want to know that the car is safe and is going to able to handle the power! Its gonna at least have to be modified car insurance rather just normal insurance with a new add ons.

Yes it does but it might be worth checking what a 1.4 converted to a 1.8t is going to cost against yours now.

All depends on the insurance company but lets say the 1.4 was 70bhp and you have now made it 300bhp they are going to want to know if the conversion has been done to high / safe standard.

Fair enough Wayne, I do understand just never done anything like this so questions need to he asked!

Jaime, my shell is bumped, scratched, bent in urrepairable places, dinged etc..

By the time I have sold my extra bits, I will have a new freshly painted shell for a ton and abit of time!

Head says well worth it, do it, be like a brand new car for next to nothing.
Heart says what the f**k are you doing, all this effort in a car worth a grand!

Decisions...

Well I think an insurance quote will soon tell you if it is worth it, but to me it seems a lot of work for the gain involved.

I think all need done is re-register the car with the engine in, and insure it as is, giving the insurance company the reg, they'll look and see 1.8t you go yup, they don't need to know what past life the car has.
Thats like saying you have to declare if you have a bump into your driveway, have to replace the bumper, do it yourself, insurance dont need to know or anything like that.
If you understand what I mean.
Even write-offs, they get a V.I.C test and thats it, nothing about making sure that total wreck is sound etc, thats what M.O.T's are for.

That is not the case, the car is a 1.4 no matter what happens, so it will need a declared engine swap.

Re-register the car with the bigger engine is what I meant. Then insure it as such.
