Don't go there Len. I've just had to pay for £300 of flights and £600 of hotel out of my savings because they "Don't do company credit cards" and I have to claim it back on expenses. Pretty sure asking for money for shoes and a suit will go down like a sack of sh!t.

Pretty naff company then! Sorry but most companies get big discounts by doing it themselves so they are the ones losing out!

Damn straight Steve, what if you didn't have that sort of money ? I only have to claim back fuel and smaller expenses (milk, coffee beans, sugar etc) at the end of the month, but if I'd be staying out overnight they'd book and pay it for me.

That sucks a hairy one, do you have a company phone or do you have to front the bills there?
Nothing worse than laying out for your job and losing out on the payback through interest and charges.
I have a Barclay card and use a travel agent to book my flights etc, this way they can be paid by PO at the end of the month, we get good discounts on flights and hotels so its a false economy to make employee's front with there own money under the guise that you will keep the costs down.
Get a good suit, keep your head down and find a better job with some perks

I love my job and £5.5K car allowance is a good enough perk for me. I've got a company phone, 8% pension and Bupa as well, so perks are good. The others in my team just have a credit card they use just for work stuff which is what I will have to do but I'm writing an email to the finance girl to say that as we expand outside of the UK, those of us that are required to visit site must have company cards. I had one in my old job and it made everyones life easier.

Just need that card then to complete the package, it really does make life easier for all concerned.
I have to do a bit of "entertaining" with customers so it gets abused most trips.
I try to look smarter than the directors, so funny when people think you are the boss because you look the part even weirder when you go out on the town or the hotel bar in a Salad fingers t shirt
Reckon your boss is just a bit insecure but he is right about brown shoes

Makes me appreciate how much i love my trade.The most entertaining i have to do is taking the German/Dutch comissioning engineers for a few pints after the project has finished and point them in the direction of the nearest titty bar  (Btw i NEVER go in with them........usually)
