We went to look at a new kuga and focus today and the interior on both is much better made than the golf

I suppose this is the wrong time also to moan about the creaking from both the Mk6's doors as the car flexes over bumps. By contrast, I can't hear a single creak or rattle from my mate's 10 plate Mondeo with 45k on the clock when he takes me out in that. Mine's only done 25k!!!!

Yep my October 2011 gti interior has rattles and buzzes. The reason I came away from renaultsport was the rattles and creaks and the golf isn't much better but It cost 2x more and it's no where near as much fun

Our 4 year old never garaged daily driver focus zetec, which is always full of dogs and baby's doesn't have a single rattle.

There's no Doubt in my mind ford are better built

I'll no doubt get slated for saying this but I think people are swayed by the showroom attractiveness of German cars. Sat in them in the showroom they feel special and quality so people want them. My experience has been between VW and Vauxhall and Ken's is between VW and Ford and we're both saying the same thing - in reality, several years after that showroom experience, VWs are no better than average. The last AA man I spoke to said he goes to loads of VWs, Audis, BMWs and Mercedes breakdowns - maybe it's the complexity of them now?
You should also try looking at the Car by Car Review on Honest John's website. The "What's Bad" section of Mk4 onward Golfs is a pretty depressing (and long) list!!!

Why, I hear you ask, do you therefore continue to buy VWs andykram? The simple answer is that I'm a private buyer and German cars' resale is better. Why? Because, despite all the cars' problems, they have more prestige in our class ridden country so people aspire to them more and are, therefore, prepared to pay more for them.

I do genuinely love both my Golfs. I also love the VW scene and the shows I go to. However, I'm not so blinkered to think they're any better built or more reliable than Fords and Vauxhalls. They're not.

When the ST comes out I'm going to make my own mind up and take it for a test drive. I'd be shocked if my MK6 is much better quality inside. I agree the ST looks a bit fussy inside but only something a test drive can fix.

I can't help thinking about the Mountune version when it's available, 300 horses with full warranty backing!!

Must admit to be disapointed in the long term durability of some of the materials used on the mk6 (seat material for example, both leather and cloth) and also some of the mechanical aspects and engineering finish. It's built to compete with Ford etc and due to expensive vw labour rates they cut corners to compete and it shows.
That's not to say it has not been like that for a while at vw as it has sadly.
It's all about accountants with vw not engineers. Make it look pritty and feel nice and you can fool the.dumb paper shuffling public
My 7 year old Leon does not rattle either and been faultless all these years  except for one single issue(just changed temp sensor) and from an.engineering point is far superior finished.than uthe 2 year old rattling fault aquiring mk6 golf I have.

I must admit the ST's have grown on me a lot. I'm sure the new version will rival the Mk6/7 GTI's on most aspects, however as they will only be available with manual gearboxes I wouldn't be interested in buying one. I know this is a boring old argument for not buying one but the car simply wouldn't meet my needs for this reason. I’m sure there are plenty of other DSG VAG drivers who would not consider one for the same reason.

If it's power you are after, wait and get the new RS when it comes.

I currently feel that the Mk6 is better quality than the new Focus. The materials in the Focus don't feel as good as those in the Golf and, to be perfectly honest, the Golf is actually more comfortable inside than the Focus for me. Perhaps it's just down to the proportions but everything in the Golf seems to fit around me nicely. The armrest is set at the right height, the seats are just the right size - it's little things like this that nudge the Golf ahead for me.

I think the new RS will be a long time coming, they will never make a 5 door Focus RS and as theres no plans for a 3 door RS we may never see one.


I won't be getting a MK7 and I want my GTI gone at least 6 months to a year before the MK7 is out so I will be getting a replacement to my MK6 in the next year.

I'll give it 20 minutes before all the badge snobs come along to scoff!!!

I parked recently next to one of these and thought it was a stunning looking thing. Other than that, I can't comment with any authority never having owned a Renault. However, if they have the confidence to offer a 4 yr 100 000 mile warranty, why can't VW? (and yes, that was a rhetorical question cos I do know the answer)
