Update got it back and he said he ended up tuning it by feel, it now drives ok but im sure it is still pinking unless its an exhaust manifold rattle, however. It cuts out once started cold and ildes fine once warmed up a few seconds.
He said the distributor was worn the weight on it or something so do i need a new dizzy to set the idle properly? or how do i check the blue coolant sensor or the knock sensor? Thanks

I think your garage owner's not a big fan of readin' and couldn't be ar$ed checking how to set the car up properly.

yeah I know its fecking annoying as i know i should have done it myself or taken it to a vw specialist, fecking old school mechanics!
i must buy a new car!
