New clutch necessary?

My 8v Anni has been crunching 2nd gear ever since i had the gearbox oil changed recently, which i was told would solve the problem not make it worse, so ive sourced a recon gearbox locally but my mechanic says i should change the clutch at the same time.

Theres nothing up with the clutch so to save myself £60 i told him to put the old one back in and i'll chance it.

I just wanted to ask you guys in your infinite wisdom, Have i done the right thing?

I personally would have put a new clutch in whilst the gearbox is out. How many miles has the car done with your clutch?

+1 I would do this for sure if i didn't know when it was last replaced...

If your happy it is in good working order then just risk it and see how you go. It's not the biggest of jobs if it goes wrong in the future. If you don't have the skill to do it yourself it will cost around £250 - £350 to get a garage to sort it

Ive got piles of history so i'll see if i can find a receipt for the last clutch, roughly what mileage would you expect to change it then? bearing in mind i never thrash it?

£250-350 is that really how much it costs for a new clutch and fitting?

Well the mechanic will be able to visually inspect the clutch given that the gearbox is out so best bet is to make an assessment then. If there is plenty life in in no point wasting the money. A clutches life span can vary widely depending on how the cars been driven. I've seen some go at 30,000 miles and seen others do much much more. My Leon Cupra has done over 100,000 miles on the same clutch.

thing is to replace it's taking the box off again, I would spend the extra and fit new.
