as someone who has to diagnose faults on the entire VAG range on a daily basis, i'm inclined to agree with the OP.
although there's far less to go wrong on a nice mk1 GTI 
or just get a mk5 and save a few quid 
Neither of these are mk6s.
Though Chuff is quite correct, mk5's do rust like mk1s.
