Coolant leak - water pump?
« on: 22 January 2012, 13:35 »
Hi there,

I bought a mk6 GTI just before Christmas and i've been really pleased with it. The car is metallic black with the 18" Monzas and leather interior. The car has been going really well but this week i noticed a slight smell of coolant and a few drips under the car. I've taken the undertray off and it appears to be leaking from somewhere on the front of the engine. Would this be the water pump - its very hard to tell as there are so many hoses in the way? I have searched on the forum and seen that a few other people have had their pumps replaced under warranty. I'll book the car in tomorrow but do you think it is ok to drive? I'll check the coolant level every evening and top up as necessary. Just out of interest - how is the water pump driven - is it electric as i couldn't see an obvious belt driven pump.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Matt

Thanks - i'll keep an eye on it. Just hope i can book it into the garage quickly and get a loan car. The water appeared to be dripping from around a black metal casing that was bolted to the block - is this part of the pump?

The leak is at the front of the block, underneather the inlet manifold - i guess this isn't the pump then?

If anything was leaking on my car it would be straight in the dealers to get fixed under warranty.

I was thinking thermostat housing as well - i presume these are plastic and may have distorted or cracked.
