Re-spraying wheel arches and sill
« on: 16 May 2005, 20:05 »
I need to re-spray my wheel arches and sills, also black part of both front and rear bumper, does it all come off easily enough, any tips/advice/pics would be greatly appreciated.

are you smoothing them?

unscrew the front bumper using a 17mm (think its 17?) socket. 4 in total.
rear bumper has another 4 and a few screws holding it on at the edges.

drill out all the rivets on the arches and discover rust. now they should come off

Think you have to unclip the sills but not sure how
:)

sounds like quite a few hours work, may give it a go though whilst there off, whats best to use for spraying them with then? a general black can of spray or back to black? can they be laquered to protect the paint or will they then come up shiny?

I would leave all the spraying/sanding down to a bodyshop if they give a right price. Spray them gloss black or something.

Sand smooth (if you want), plastic primer, then lots of black paint coats then lots of top coats

If you just spray it with a black paint can then it would flake off after a few days and would be a waste fo time

Once you have un-done the 4 bolts under the car the bumper should slide towards you. Wont need new bumper clips mate.

You have to mask off the coloured area of the bumper as its one piece. The bottom front splitter comes off
