What is this engines code?

Hi, could you tell me the engine code, it's a 1989 Jetta 1.8 8v petrol

It's in the garage at the minute, needs a gearbox, wanted to know what gearboxes fits it, thort knowing the engine code would be a good start. Also where about on the engine would the code be?

Rear of the block and possibly on the rear of the head too. There should be a sticker in the boot, a sticker on the door/door frame and im sure there is a plate if you quickly whip of all the plastic in the scuttle tray
