Guys, are there reasonable road bikes to be had for around £500 (new)?

Yes, but I would advise to see if you can eek your way up to £700 if you are buying new as you will get so much more bike for your money though sales on chainreactioncycles and leisurelakes. If not, have a look at reviews of 2012, 2011 bikes online and then hunt down your favourite one on ebay.

I'm looking to use the work cyclescheme, so assume it'll need to be on a fairly well known website, and new?  Looking to save paying tax on it as for the next 12 months I've got a pretty much guaranteed wedge of overtime coming my way.

Any good?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=95443

It will do the job absolutely fine but as any cyclist will tell you, you want as much as bigger savings as possible on the most kit possible. If your on cycle to work however I would be looking at the 700-800 bikes. Loads more bang for your buck as you end up with some really nice kit on them and your 30% or so saving will drop you down to £500 any how. So you could be looking at £1500 of bike for 500 quid. Not bad

*EDIT* I would also ask if your sure about a road bike, hybrid and cyclocross bikes make ace commuters that run on the road only slightly slower than a roadie but let you access canal paths, green lanes and woodland footpaths that a roadie restricts you from (my road bike would disagree with this however as It often finds itself getting muddy).
