Are these any better than SR Suntour?

I'm going to be doing trails uphill/downhill in the Peak District.

I've been looking on pinkbike, but I don't know what's good and what isn't.

Also, what kind of travel do you think I could get away with before it is too much for the frame?

I've got an old GT Avalanche which is going to be pretty much the same frame and geometry I run a set a revelations which I run at 110 as not to put too much stress on the headset or give too slow a ride.  100-110 mm should be fine.

you could go for something like this

Just don't buy suntour as they are shocking.

Cheers Ridg, I'll look for something with around 100mm of travel then I think.

I'm considering getting some hydraulic rim brakes for now as they're very cheap, but will do the job nicely

no worries, your main problem is gonna be finding a set cheap that will take v or rim brakes, have you considered spending slightly more and going for a bike with disc brakes from the off?

What do you guys wear to go cycling?

depends what and were I'm riding, if it's trail then baggy shorts with 661 kyle straight knee pads and a baggy top, if it's XC race then I'll wear I proper jersey, bib shorts and baggy shorts of the top to help keep my arse dry.

I'd recommend getting a pair of cycling shorts or something with a decent pad as they do make the ride more comfortable, this also comes down to your saddle / suspension choice.

Thermal bottoms and top for cold mornings. Baggy jersey on top. And either baggy shorts or combat trousers depending on weather. Helmet, gloves and glasses to keep the mud/spray out my eyes.

+1 on padded boxers/shorts my new seat is rock solid and would kill you're arse after a while
