I've just had to let my road tax run out as can't afford to pay for it, annoying thing is it's done on emissions and even though it's 10 year old it's emissions are lower than brand new cars that pay £35 per year or whatever it is. but I've got to pay over £200 per year. hows that work?

If it was slightly newer then it would fall into the full on tax bands based on emissions.
