Loss of boost
« on: 21 December 2011, 07:26 »
Ho everyone still got a boost problem but struggling to find time to go see someone about it.

Bur today managed to drag my dad outside (in the freezing cold ha) and we rigged up a pressure test using a small tin off beans to block the intercooler to inlet manifold pipe   and then used a pressure testing piece into the TIP and used the compressor to put the pressure upto 10+ psi and we could here air escaping somewhere....

So after a ages of spraying with leak detector and gettin crazy cold my dad removed the oil cap and wooosh all the air escaped, this severally confused me as surely with the inlet manifold blocked no air should get in the engine??

just wondering if someone could shed some light on the situation, is there somesort of passing valve? my dad thinks it may be a exhaust recirulation valve or something.

the noise of the air escaping seemed to be coming from the area around the split pipe that come from the rockers cover and around the fpr like beneath it.

cheers for any help.

Take it you didn't blank off the prv "hockey puck" on the tip?

The leak you can hear is most probably coming from the pcv system, this is a mass of pipes under the inlet manifold and are prone to splitting. If you can't see it, try using a small length of hose to listen for it.

probably best to renew the lot or ditch it and fit a catch can.

I believe you are meant to leave the oil filler cap off when pressure testing as it is normal for some air to escape from there. Otherwise you may risk damaging some seals.

What is the purpose of blocking of the puck valve? Sorry bit I don't really know what it does haha
And I looked around there but it seemed to be comin form closer to the tip at the side of the rocket cover.

Cheers

From what I understand, if you remove the valve from the tip and block the tip then remove the oil cap, you prevent pressuring the rocker cover, and areas not usually subject to pressure.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Think you will get some leakage through the block, take a vid and see if you can measure the leak rate.

Mine takes about 30s to drop 1 psi. just for comparison. This is when pressuring from the turbo outlet though.

I did the test today, <a href="http://s1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/golfyste/?action=view&current=5fceed91.mp4" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/golfyste/5fceed91.mp4" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>. ( dunno if that will work)

But I seemed to loose about 10psi a min but I couldn't really hear any air escaping apart from the sound of oil glooping.

i would say you have a leak in your PCV system.

Are you running Silicone boost hoses?
Are there proper jubilee clips used for securing the boost hoses?
Are you running a standard Re-circ valve?
Have you checked the vaccuum pipes for splits?

It may also be a sign of a weak actuator if your struggling to hold boost.

I think it has had the blue bottle part of the PVC system removed.
I'm not running silicone hoses throughout
but I'm gonning to invest in a ths front mounted and I have just purchased a new charge - pancake pipe hose.
All the jubilee clips seem ok and should be fine and I have replaced mich of the vacuum pops with the silicone vacuum hose.
And No i have a recently purchased 007p
I have though about the actuator but it is running a forge one but my knowledge on these is low so I dot really know what I'm looking at.

Cheers
