Grinding noise..
« on: 19 December 2011, 13:30 »
Hi All,  Looking for some advice on a developing noise. Best way I can describe it is a rubbing/grinding/rattle as I turn left under power, sounds to be coming from directly infront, but low, of the driver. I changed the CV joint at the weekend but this hasn't resolved it. My dad (a mechanic) fears it may be the gearbox or diff bearings?! This sounds like a pain in the asse and expensive. Anyone have other ideas I could pursue first?

Oh and its an '88 gti 8v 147K

Thanks

Matt

Which side did you change, and did you grease it?

Have you checked your wheel bearings?

Thanks for replying..

I've now changed both CV joints. Haven't looked at wheel bearings.. It only happens when turning left, wouldn't wheel bearings be more of a constant noise?

The rear engine mount is down there. It may be past its best if still the original. This can go metal to metal under sideways forces, worth a look at least.

i take it you changed both outside CV joints ?
have you checked the inner ones ?

or try jacking up one side at a time then spin it by hand to see if you can locate the sound
move the wheel through the turning arc too

Yeah I've changed both outer CV joints. How do I go about checking inner ones?

Get under there and have a check for splits on the boots. I also assume you absolutely rammed the new cvs with molly grease?

Yeah, absolutely ramma dam dammed them with the stuff. I replaced both outer CV's (and boots) in an attempt to cure the noise. It was there before I replaced them.
