^^^^ yes and my point is when you paid 23k for your gti you could have brought a low spec Bmw for around that price just like you will when the mk7 gti comes out, also you can spec a bmw 3 series way above list with options.

Yes and my point all along is that I wasn't comparing the GTi to a new BMW - I was comparing it to a 2nd hand fast one. At £23k I chose to buy the new GTi. At £30k I would choose the 2nd hand 330 or whatever every time so they've lost a customer.

That is my point because more and more people will do the same.
You could have had a 2nd hand 335i for 23k in 2009, i know what you are saying tho but on the other hand people like new cars so when faced with paying 27k for a  brand new gti or 27k for a 2-3 year old fast Bmw most would go with gti if they are gti fans. Its always been the same. imo

The price gap between VW and BMW etc has definately closed up, but that's probably got somthing to do with having to make room for Skoda and Seat below VW in the groups range.

In 1990, when my Mk2 was new, it cost about £12,500. That year, a mate of mine paid £29,000 for a BMW 525i. That price included optional extras such as a radio, electric rear windows and mats. It even had to make do with cloth seats. Today, you can get into a BMW 520i for £31,190 (albeit with no extras, but still better speced than one 20 years ago), which makes the Golf compartitively expensive.

However as said before, people will still "want" a Golf, so will buy one regardless of what it costs.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

i think a 525i was mid range back in the day when you could get a 518i. There is no doubt they are getting closer im not denying that but on the other hand would you really like a brand new Gti to be available to the masses for arguments sake 15k, i know i wouldn't.

-----------
FOCUS ST NEW
Both a five-door hatchback and - more surprisingly - a five-door estate have been shown. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost turbocharged petrol engine in place of the previous ST's 2.5-litre turbocharged five. Despite the loss of capacity, the new motor makes a claimed 246bhp - 24bhp more than the old car - accompanied by a fat 266lb ft of torque.

The new ST will also have the option of Ford's DSG!!!

I think that's a smart looking motor (as a hatch I might add). Shame about the gap between the bonnet and the grille - surely the bonnet's not closed properly on that yellow one?

I think some GTI owners could be tempted by the new ST....

Have had a hire car Focus then went straight into a Golf afterwards. How could I describe it ? The Golf feels a good class above the Focus.
Also the image of banging subwolfers and spoilers that wont look out of place on a plane would make me feel embarrassed to drive one.
However If it's just more speed you need then you can't argue against the Focus.

I'm not entirely taken by the styling on the new Focus ST. I think it's tried a bit to emulate the VXR with the central exhaust pipe (a feature which I think the VXR pulls off better). I am also not too keen on the rear lights which are desperately trying to escape up the flanks of the car. Styling wise I am more taken by the proposed Astra VXR than by the new ST.

I am however very interested in the plans to offer a DSG alternative. I'm hoping that this will prompt VW to offer a more competitive GTI now that the hatches from other manufacturers are offering similar technology.

But in terms of feel, I have to agree. Before purchasing, and again since having purchased, my GTI I've been fortunate enough to have driven (or at least been in) all of it's competitors (inc. Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, Seat, Subaru, Mitsubishi, and Honda) The only car which felt similar in terms of quality was an Edition 30 GTI. The rest all had something about them which felt slightly cheaper. The exception perhaps is the Type R which is just fantastic inside - it feels like a race car - but the GTI IMO was of a much higher quality.

I'd even go so far as to say that the GTI is on a par with our previous Mercedes C-Class. Sure the badge might not have the same class to those who care, but the product behind the badge is definitely just as good (if not better) in that the Golf offers just the right level of refinement, sportiness, practicality, comfort, build quality and class for my requirements.

Of course this could all change as manufacturer's are constantly working to improve the models but after owning this GTI (and this has been my first VAG car really), I'm 99% convinced that the GTI will be the car for me again when the Mk7 is released.

I know its not a VXR but i sat inside a new Astra Elite, i think thats top of the range, and then i went and sat in a 1.4s golf next to it. Im not joking the golf was 4 classes higher. Astra was a complete mess and really crap plastic so i expect vxr to be the same.
