I really don't get what all the whinging is about. VW build a very good car, tell us how much they want us to pay more it, and many people but one. For those people who don't like that, don't have to buy one, but as VW know, there are plenty of other people that will.

If you want a faster car, then buy one. If you think the Golf is too expensive, buy a cheaper car, or just keep your current car a bit longer, save some more money and buy one when you can afford it.

There is another option. Wait a bit longer and buy a used one. There really is no shame in that. I'd rather have a second hand car on my drive that I had paid for, rather than being financed up on an identical looking new car, that deep down I knew wasn't really mine.

Signed.

And realistically how many people would buy a new car without finance? People just don't have 35k sat in the account ready to roll, and those that do arnt buying vw, nice deposit towards an R8.
That's the most stupid statement I've ever heard, of course the car is yours, it's like saying o I have a mortgage so the house isn't really mine.... There would be no 2nd hand cars to buy unless people got to pay on tick

I bought mine for cash.....

The car isn't yours when you finance it other than through a personal loan. The car remains the property of the finance company.  You can't compare the purchase of a house with the purchase of a car, they are completely different and regulated in different ways.

Me too. Always have and always will.

If people are taking out PCP's or similar over three years to drive around in a new car, what difference does the screen price make? Surely all that matters to them is what their monthly payments will be and whether you'll have anything in it at the end? VW's are supposed to have good residuals, so if you are only paying off the depreciation, it shouldn't cost anymore that a cheaper, faster depreciating car.

As for the £35k in the bank being enough for a deposit for an R8, I'd want a lot more behind me than that before even contemplating a car like that.

Then you both are in the minority, poor people like me have to make do with 15k deposits, and pay the rest monthly... I pay 1.5k ontop of the sale price over 3year which keeps more money available @ the readys

Lombards finance company is a win, never use Vw finance

The point I've tried to make and which some people still haven't got is that eventually fewer and fewer people will buy VWs at £30k prices, whether it be cash or finance. They're not worth that sort of money, full stop. So there will be fewer and fewer nearly new/second hand ones available for the likes of me to buy. You can't keep putting your prices endlessly upwards when all you have on the bonnet is a VW badge.
I've no idea when it will happen but it will.

£30k at the end of the day is not run of the mill money - it's premium money. Simple as.

My other point is that you are not treated at VW dealers like you've spent £30k. You may as well have bought a Fox. And that's where the premium marques come in cos I'm pretty damned sure if I'd spent £30k in a Lexus dealer, for example, I wouldn't be treated like a faceless number like I am at VW and be told my car's creaks and squeaks aren't fixed under warranty.

I get the point you're making Andy, but I'm sure that there will still be people that will buy VW's long after you and many other people with similar opinions have taken their money to another dealership.

Whether we think their business strategy is right or wrong, I'm sure VW know a bit more about market forces than we do.

I think its the £30k+ outright purchase for me too, and I mean to have that much cash tide up in a car.

I am in the minority too it seems as we paid cash for ours, and for me £25k+/- 2k is about s much as I'd want to pay for a new car as a cash purchase.

I have never thought of getting a PCP type thing, they seem not too meet my needs, as you tend to be tied to one manufcturer or they find ways of giving you a very low MGFV / baloon.

It also depends on the car I guess, if it ticked all the boxes 100% then I'd just save the extra until I could afford one.

End of day I like cars, we all do on here and we are not the types that will go and buy a brand new silver Pug 308 1.4 because we love everything about it will we?

We buy a GTi for everything that it is, and unfortunatly that costs us all.

It only takes a few of us to say "bubbles" to spending £30k and their marketing people might think again. What's interesting is that the obvious step to make within the VW group at the £30k point is to go buy an Audi as that's their premium arm. However, in my case, I hate the look of Audis so they lose me as a customer despite me loving the GTi. Now I'm no marketing man but surely that will become a problem?

I think the problem is that there are so many fleet and company car sales that if a few private purchasers made the stand, it wouldn't make too much difference. It's not just VW, have a look at some other marques and spec a car up to the std you want. They are all getting shaggin' expensive!
