I No matter what VW and their marketing men think, VW is definitely not a premium marque.

To be honest I carn't actually think of a more chavtastic brand then GTI.  Dont get me wrong I love it but  :undecided:

I get exactly what the GTi is about - I own two and have owned 6 in my time.

I think its a northern thing. These southerns dont have the roads or countryside to drive fast. 220bhp round urban sprawls is more then enough.

Are you more northern than me?

Hold on a sec, the GTI is compared against the VXR/ST etc ? An icon classic, a refined symbol of motoring is up against 2 of the most f**king chavtastic cars around ? The only thing thats missing from them is the f**king burberry paint! And to whine and b!tch about it not having more BHP, is not what the GTI is all about, the GTI was never about how fast it is. If you want BHP go buy that big illuminous snotter RS.

I didnt think my GTI was fast enough when i got it. Thats why i modified it almost straight away. Once it made 250bhp after the remap everything was how it should of been. Then i got bored again and went to 300bhp when before i could continue it got stolen.
I dont buy my car to ferry the kids around. Im  a customer who buys a car to get the most enjoyment possible out of it.

Each car caters to a different market. When looking at a car I like to cover the ground quickly but in a degree of comfort.

You obviously bought the car for the image history whatever. which represents a portion of the market the gti is aimed at. I on the otherhand bought it as a performence car to be driven fast. I represent another portion of the market along with all the others inbetween.
Now i speak for somebody who will buy a gti for how it drives. How quickly it covers ground A > B. I would not buy a MK7 GTI at 220bhp for 27k. Sorry but no.
Alot of you will buy it which will continue to say to VW that they can offer less for more.

Didn't you test drive show you that it was quick enough for you? If you want quick and comfort and style etc get an R, the GTI is clearly not the car for you.

It however is the car for 99% (10%) of the people on this forum and is the reason we are here. Regarding the £27k for a mark 7 I'd add more £'s to that I reckon that that will only be 3 door in bog standard form.

I will not be buying a MK7, not because of the reported 220 HP but because I will not pay that kind of money for a Golf.  All of us on here could have bought an RS, an S3 Cupra R etc but chose not to for many reasons....

Actually I wouldn't be so sure of that 99%  The actual GTI owners over the whole forum are probably the 1% remnant.

Good point.

your so far north your practically foreign

And Jimmy, Would you pay 27k if the golf was 300bhp?

Exactly, the price has to be factored against things such as power aswell as comfort.

27k More your saying. Has to be balanced against performence.

I wouldnt buy a 300bhp Golf unless it had four wheel drive, if I wanted a torque steering moster I'd have got an RS.

Tbh I think an R is where I am going next but a used one, I ain't paying close to £40k for a new good spec Golf.

Ha you dont know what your missing, Turned the gti into a real drivers car with 300bhp. But yes I bought a Golf R after my GTI was stolen.
Make sure you get the 3door ( Looks much better ) And get the DSG and 19" wheels for the blacked out xenons.
DSG is a real win after coming from the manual GTI

Isn't that the point? - £27k for a 220bhp Golf is too much. If it were another 50/60 you could possibly think about it but there'll be countless BMs, Mercs etc. with that power for that price.

And in any case I won't be able to afford £27k so that's another potential customer VW have lost. When you're at nearly the £30k point the only social classes who can afford a car that expensive are less and less likely to buy a GTi. They'll buy an XF, a Mercedes or whatever so VW will eventually shoot themselves in the foot.

I really don't get what all the whinging is about. VW build a very good car, tell us how much they want us to pay for it, and many people buy one. For those people who don't like that, don't have to buy one, but as VW know, there are plenty of other people that will.

If you want a faster car, then buy one. If you think the Golf is too expensive, buy a cheaper car, or just keep your current car a bit longer, save some more money and buy one when you can afford it.

There is another option. Wait a bit longer and buy a used one. There really is no shame in that. I'd rather have a second hand car on my drive that I had paid for, rather than being financed up on an identical looking new car, that deep down I knew wasn't really mine.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
