Sold a car, turns out it had been clocked
« on: 12 December 2011, 22:27 »
So I bought a Punto for £225 quid with 66k on the advert and the clocks.

Stuck a headgasket on it and sold it for £950, private sale. The guy has come back round my house demanding his money back saying the car has been clocked. Well I have told him to leave while I try and find out why and when it was supposedly clocked. Well he left the car and the keys and said he'd be back.

Wasn't aggressive but was firm, which is fair enough.

Where do I stand? I don't think it's been clocked but he seems to think according to previous MOT's it has been. I haven't got the certificate to check or the logbook. I will be asking for the certificate though.

I knew nothing about it and to be honest I don't think it has been clocked, it drives pretty sound, not too rattly or anything looks clean. Do I give him his money back or what? Obviously I will be checking the history and if it isn't clocked tell him to do one.

INB4: You didn't check it before buying blah blah blah, it was £225 I spent £30 on parts, I didn't bother witht he hassle.

Where all my moneys went.

Well now you know to check the history no matter what, you can then add that to the price along with the report

Did he not think to check the history himself?

Well that's my thoughts. His evidence is he says he's checked the history by his MOT tester mate or something.

Tbh, no I didn't check the history, nor did I look at the car before handing over the cash as I just bought it from a mate (Nissan dealer) as it was chucked in as a part-ex.

Sounds like you'll be doing this regularly so might be worth checking the history to save yourself the agro later on.

2 Golden rules of the Motortrade! (1) NEVER buy a Fiat  (2) NEVER EVER buy a Fiat to sell on, every single time, It'll come back to bite you! lesson learnt
