I have a new gt tdi 170 - i have had it for about 3 weeks and its got 2000 miles on so far.  i have averaged 43mpg so far overall - but on a motorway run at about 80-85mph i got 49mpg out of it.  cane it and it drops to about 36!    get about 500-540 from a tankful

I think as it gets more miles on it it will get better as thats what happened with the passat diesels i have owned in the past.

Good lord a chat on fuel economy on a GTI site, I never thought I'd see it, this has got to be the site for me, serious but fun I'm glad I found you.

Ok for what it's worth I read of a consumer test recently that compaired manufactures MPG figures with real life, some came out better some worse but I was really happy to see the Mark 5 GTi come out with the same figure as VW quote, now all I have to do is stop grinning when I start the engine, slow down and try and get mine to match!!!
The car in front is a Toyota............but only whilst I change down a gear!!
