MK5 GTI Fuel Economy

The GTI fuel economy is in the book at 35mpg combined but im sure its not near that. Before I buy I as just wondering what the fuel consumption is really like and a more accurate mpg figure - I thought actual owners would be the best to ask?

The reason i ask is because i have been considering the 140GT TDI and then having it remapped to about 170BHP. However I would prefer the GTI as I love the GTI shape and the actual diesel version wont be out probably until next year.

I have not got mine yet (still on order ) - but a mate of mine has got his...
If he drives it hard he's getting about 18 - 25mpg - but driving sensibly it's around 33 on main roads, 36 on motorways and about 30 around town.
Those figures are from the onboard computer - so I would think that they are reasonably accurate.

You do realise that it is supposed to run on super unleaded only though!!?

I am however very confused about the fuel type issue. Having read the forums here I have seen as you say the car must run on Super Unleaded. However in the fuel type spec on the GTI brochure I have it is specified as Unleaded RON 95 - which as far as I was aware is normal unleaded? Two VW dealers have never mentioned to me about the fuel (Tho I have not mentioned to them explicitly as yet about it). Yet other people here state that it will run on either type of unleaded?

had my GTI for two months now. I keep the Climate control on all the time and it averages 30-34mpg....even saw 39mpg on the computer on a motorway run. As for the fuel type, I run it on super unleaded all the time (had a scoob until now so used to it)..but the manual does state I can run it on normal unleaded but ever 2 or 3 tanks use 1 tank of superunleaded...think you are safe with either, but I know the impreza always was much smoother on the 97 octane juice :-)

I had a flat tyre and drove 30 miles home (25 miles of motorway and 5 through a city centre) and managed 41.1mph!

Would save me a fortune if I could always drive like that!!

If you use 95RON over 97RON, you loose a little BHP and Torque, MPG do not suffer much as the KNOCK sensor retards the ignition timing so no 'pinking occurs'. Here in Ireland 97RON is hard to come by as in alot of european countries so the GOLF GTI as with most cars will run just fine on 95RON, no damage will occour. The owners manual for all makes of car state the fuel type, The best example I have is the focus RS, it will NOT run on 95RON as it has no KNock sensor, if you do run on 95RON, in about 10,000 miles you will need a rebuild, NOT so on the GOLF or and VW/Audi group car.

you will see the car much smoother and the engine performing better on super unleaded. my 20v loves the stuff and runs a load better now even on tesco's fuel

I have had my new GTI for 1 week now (With DSG auto gearbox) according to the trip computer I have averaged 26mpg so far which I thought was very low esp as I am still running car in so driving more carefully than usual . With my 2 litre petrol mark 4 GTI I have just sold I got about 38 mpg while running in and about 28mpg after run in when I tend to drive quite hard . I am quite dissappointed by the figures for my new car as on paper it is supposed to have similar or sl better economy than mark 4 . I mentioned this to dealer and they said it was a bit early to tell and to keep an eye on it for a couple of months. I have only done 750 miles  so I will wait and see what it is like after 1000 miles when I will be driving it more aggresively. Auto gear box is supposed to give marginally better mpg than manual for GTI alto reverse is usually the case. When I spoke to dealer they told me 1. that it will use more fuel while being run in and 2. Automatic will use more fuel than manual. I believe both of these statements are untrue and it is annoying how they treat you like an idiot and expect you to swallow any line they give you. All the above figures are for mixed driving conditions and the best figure I have had for the new car is about 32.5 for a 15 mile motorway journey staying at or below 70mph . I wonder if the Lambda probe which I believe automatically adjusts the fuel mixture according to engine temp etc may be faulty . I am not very knowledgable about these things but my previous car developed this problem twice and the mpg fell to about22 altho the car still ran smoothly . If it had not been for the trip computer I do not know how long it would have taken me to notice.
Would be interested to know average mpg ( according to trip computer) other mark 5 GTI owners are getting and for what type of driving

HI Guys

Been coming to the forum for about 2 months now but decided register.

I got me Gti on 10 Feb, tbh couldnt wait another 3 weeks for the 05 plate

On normal driving, not grandad style im comfortably getting between 350 - 380 a tank using Shell Optimax.

Infact ive even managed on with long runs to get 400 miles out from the tank.  Before the GTI i had the MKV GT TDI and the best i ever ever got from that was 450 miles.  And that was after i put 10k on it.

So far really impressed with the consumption on mine.

Computer says middle 30's most of the time, unless im in hyper mood .  But i always prefer the trip reset on fill ups then relaying on the computer.

Anyway this was my GT TDI, owned it 10 months, had a prob with the steering rack and whilst waiting test drove the GTI demonstrator and signed that after noon lol

It's better now it's on Optimax... Not realising it needed super juice, it ran its first hundred miles on 95 RON.
It's roughly 30mpg, climbing to mid 30's on a run. (some contrast to the TDi I had, but this doesn't sound like a Taxi and create clouds of smoke under acceleration)
I love the dark headlining on the GTi, and the handling is something else.
I've always wanted a Golf Gti, so I'll live with its thirst... worth every penny!
