Ok, we need to an 8V and a 16V, tie them togther via the towing eye's at the rear and see who wins :)

there is a rolling road graph on clubgti forum somewhere which will settle that arguement  :wink:



the 8v or 16v is basically down to how u drive.

if you like a screaming motor and drivig right on the edge then get a 16v

if u want something simple and nippy to drive then get a 8v


just remember u can get more power out of a moddeed 16v then a modded 8v

there is a rolling road graph on clubgti forum somewhere which will settle that arguement  :wink:

no it doesn't. i've posted the output graphs three times so far on this forum. 16v has more power more torque at any point n the rev range.

if you want something gutless buy an 8v. if you want something interesting buy a 16v.

since when?

they both have a gearbox and an accelerator pedal. the amount of co-ordination needed to make them go faster is the same.

if you want a 16v to go fast use the accelerator - thats what its there for.

if you want an 8v to go fast. pray.

ive got a '91 8v, i was debating between a 8v or 16v when i first got mine, i read up on the fact that 16v are quicker etc, but i only had £1500 to spend and it was my first insurance,and all the 16v's i saw for sale were complete dogs, they had been thrashed. so when a mint 8v came up for sale it was too good to pass up, im a bit of a fanny driver cos i never take my car to the red line and apparently this is where 16v's come alive so im happy with my 8v, its a big jump from a crappy 1.4 honda civic

id say have a go of both and see which one suits your driving style, i use my gti everyday and i must admit i do drive it quite hard but not enough to get myself into trouble

8v quick from a standing start up to about 2.5k on revs.

16v slow up until 2.5k revs when it comes on cam and then screams until you change gear.

Tbh i would have a 16v over an 8v any day of the week, i find them much more refined, and better to drive, but maybe that is just personal preferance. Torque etc do not really come into it, as the 16v out does the 8v each and every time.

Fact is that 8v will move off quicker as the stroke is shorter meaning a nice bit of mean accelleration, but other than that will be left for dust by a 16v, hence why nearly every track mk1-2 are 16v's.

who gives a f**k about 2.5k rpm? since when have you raced around town limiting yourself to 2.5k traffic light racing?

2.5k is generally the point at which you should be at in town anyway as you dont stress the engine from pulling away at low rpm, and its actually running fairly efficiently at that point as well.

if you want to get gritty - stick a 16v into 5th at 1200rpm and do the same with an 8v. then see who gets to 2500rpm quicker. clue - its not the milk float. its the car with more power and torque.

gee, give up about the 8v.
