8v compared to 16v

erm simple fact:

8v quick from a standing start up to about 2.5k on revs.

16v slow up until 2.5k revs when it comes on cam and then screams until you change gear.

who gives a f**k about 2.5k rpm? since when have you raced around town limiting yourself to 2.5k traffic light racing?

anyone who is looking at this convo from the point of where a 8v becomes in-effective against a 16v. Which consequently i was.

I'm not arguing for the 8v as i know what a 16v can do, maybe you need to look at my post before going off on one about who sh!t it is. Each to their own some are 16v nuts some are 8v nuts.

I find that there isn't much difference between till about 70+ mph where the 16v just goes bye bye. But round a tight country road where getting up to above 80 is difficult there is nothing in it. I drive this little good road near where I live and theres one specific corner where I used to come out of in third gear and I find at this corner the 8v pulls more out of it bettter than the 16v just painly due to the fact thet the 8v can pull better from 2800-4000 rpm.but after that it starts to dye off. The 8v is a better engine. Ask a good VAG mechanic?

2.5k is generally the point at which you should be at in town anyway as you dont stress the engine from pulling away at low rpm, and its actually running fairly efficiently at that point as well.

if you want to get gritty - stick a 16v into 5th at 1200rpm and do the same with an 8v. then see who gets to 2500rpm quicker. clue - its not the milk float. its the car with more power and torque.

gee, give up about the 8v.

oh an tin mate dont take every 16v/8v debate as a personal attack against you. neither car is better than the other as a car. they just perform differently in any given situation. performance wise the 16v is above the 8v of course it is or vw wouldnt have released it!

you cant win this argument some people aare gonna argue 16v some people are gonna argue 8v nothing you can do about so calm down and dont take offence. but to say 8v is gutless is a bit unfair. mk3 maybe but thats an entirely different argument!

its not high and mighty, its simply pointing out time and time again that the 8v is inferior across the range. no matter how many people bring up this matter it hangs around because some 8v owners refuse to see sense that their car is slower.

when they lose one argument they then move onto to town drivability! sorry, but there are nicer cars to drive in town than a Golf GTI whether its an 8v or 16v. I doubt whether anyone here has bought an 8v on the basis that its:

a) good to drive in town
b) its good to 2.5k rpm

if that is your criteria for buying a car - buy a Driver. you get better mpg, much nicer gearbox, a car that is probably less ragged, and looks just as good and probably costs less to insure.
