As above

Also check the wiring to the starter, check the earth points for corrosion on the solenoid but its sounds like how mine did last year which at the time I paid £70 for a new remanufactured one from Bosch.

Thank you Leon27,

Do you remember where did you get it from?

Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking on the motor. It should spring out and engage your flywheel to turn the engine over. Its hard to make out if your engine is turning over, but dont think it is on the first try. New starter motor time me thinks.

As above. Mine does the same from time to time, starts fine on the seconds start.

I got this one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK3-2-0-8V-GTI-1992-97-STARTER-MOTOR-ST045-/370558437999?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5647010a6f

Cheaper than anywhere else I found, and you get a 2 year warranty which is exactly the same as any other branded ones.

I went to German and Swedish cost £90 but got £40 back when I took my old broken one back to them. I just took mine off then went to them so only payed £50.

Does this sounds like a reasonable explanation http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101010205642AA1VFtL too?

Because what you're experiencing is the starter gear not engaging with the flywheel and spinning the engine over. The "hissing" is the starter motor gear spinning freely.

The problem in the link you posted is far more complicated as the guy is running LPG & petrol and it's backfiring and running rich, so it's totally irrelevant.
