Hissing sound on cold start, second start normal
« on: 20 November 2011, 08:50 »
Hi All,

During the last week I had start up issues with the car.Almost every morning when I turn the ignition on for a first time, car does not start but I can hear a constant hissing noise for as long as I hold the key to the right. However when I turn ignition again it started ok everytime. Is it something easy to diagnose?I hope it is not something serious to break the bank just before Christmas shopping starts.

So it hisses when you turn the key and hold in position when starter motor normally Kicks in?
Or do you mean it hisses when ignition turned on?

Hi

It only hisses when I turn the key and hold it in the position.Nothing else happens, engine does not start but the constant hissing sound persists. When turn it off and turn it on again, engine starts instantly.

Sounds to me and I think Stainesy was hinting at it too, that the starter motor is causing the noise as it might be siezing up. Best thing is to get a video up of the noise from the engine bay

Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking on the motor. It should spring out and engage your flywheel to turn the engine over. Its hard to make out if your engine is turning over, but dont think it is on the first try. New starter motor time me thinks.

Yeah defo need a new starter motor mate. Mine did exactly the same for about a week then totally went. In the end it will just make a high pitch whizzing sound where it's spinning but not spinning out to engage with flywheel.

Easy job mate. I did mine in about half hour no need to jack car up or anything. Just stick a jack under the gearbox and take the weight maybe jack it a little bit.
Undo all the wires and connectors remembering where they go.
Undo the bolts that holt it to engine mount bracket. And remove.
Then fitting new one is reverse of that.

I found it easyer to take take bolt out of engine bount braced to mount. Then you can hold bracket with hand and line up 2 bolt easy then lower gearbox down into mount position with bolt in. If that makes sense lol.

I assume new starter motor means trip to my local rip-off garage?

Sorry just read it now.So I guess it is doable, I just need a new starter motor :)
