I'm not sure wheel size makes a huge difference .. the road noise with my current R (on 19"'s and Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's) is quieter than my Mk5 Gti (on 17" Continental Sport Contact II's)

Which is really odd cause my Winter Contacts on 18's are far quieter than my Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's on 19's!

Nice idea's thanks kids, I won't be changing the tyres again though the car had only done 200 miles when I changed them the first time ( before I'd even washed it for the first time strangely ) that was to help with the road noise!

An interesting thing I've noticed is how loud my horn is in the cabin, not that I care of course but it will be interesting tomorrow when I compare it to docs gtd. Our thinking is there is more sound proofing in the diesel. I'll let you know.

Thanks again keep them coming.

That was one thing I noticed between the MK5 and the MK6, the drop in road noise.
In fact that was one of the things I was slightly disappointed about, it was nearly too quiet and refined and not as raw.

Sounds a bit strange if you have excessive road noise..

Just to clarify, my GTD is silent in the tyre dept with the same tyres, although Wills are 18"

Gtmaxxx's are pretty loud, both Will and I had them on our MK5 R32's

I can't help but think its a 3 door thing  :undecided:

Anyone with 5 door GTIs hearing lots of road noise or all 3 doors?

There is according to VW, as the Diesel engine is louder at tickover. I checked on this about a year ago.

my 5 door on 18s has a lot of road noise but i think its partly down to tyre size and the bridgestones bing a noisy tyre.

my clio 197 on sport contact 3's wasn't this loud - but all the rattles and engine noise probably drowned out the road noise!

BTW, Audi now use spray-on noise insulation under the bonnet of the Q3. It's lighter and more effective. Worth investigating.

Running a 5 door on Bridgestones during the summer and Contis in the winter months, the Contis are quieter than the Bridgestones but noise has never been a problem as I find my cabin nice and quiet, the only time I get noise is when I have the hole in the roof open on slide and I get a dreadful booming noise.
