induction kit or pannel filter????

Hi guys as title says really,

i got mk2 8v digi
she got kent cam, stainless exhaust system, polished throttle and one of the metal intake pipes,

when i got the car it had a k&n induction on it but the fittings were broke so sucking in unfiltered air, so i put on a standard box and standard filter.

now i need to buy a new MAF unit as myne is playing up and was thinking of upgrading airfilter at the same time

whats best to go for a induction kit, K&n or pipecross foam kit or a copy foam filter
or just a standard box with a k&n, Green filter in it with maybe a few holes

im not bothered about induction noise more power gains and smoothness of the idle

That should explain to you why the MAF failed in the first place mate 
Did you know all G60's and Rallyes faired better with the standard paper filter Dunc!

well the maf atm i got is the 3rd unit ive had

1st unit ,when i got the car had the k&n cone filter on it that ended up failing.
 
2nd unit, replaced about 1.5 thousand ago and run with standard air filter, always had miss fire and low power with this one and finally car wouldnt run.

3rd unit, I got it off ebay about a week ago works really well but the co ajust screw is mangled, threaded and jammed so i have to open throttle to start car and using way to much fuel.

so i need a new maf again hopfully this time ill have one that works and i can set my fuel correctly ( cant find anyone that sells a recon/new unit)

i have read about the aftermarket filters messing up the maf units but wasnt sure if that was specafied at a induction or anything like that?

standard box (smoothed out on the inside) with a pipercross panel filter, works just fine for me

The experience I've had on all cars is that dirt or oil from the performance filter flies off and hits the temperature sensor. This combo inturns starts to over heat the MAF due to contaminations of the sensor.
I've researched a few situations with different filter types and a few times on rolling road.
The results are interesting on different cars, but heat soak from the induction, pipes or block affected the density of the oxygen flow into the induction. You can increase performace, but eventually at the risk of damaging the head with crap.
Its just like hoovers the filters still need cleaning/replacing even if its bagless otherwise the motor gets crap in it.
The worst offenders are when the chaps clean there cotton filters then apply sh!t loads of oil to help catch the dirt and all it does at speed is fly off and hit the MAF and head.
I spoken to a great VW dub tuner Called John Mitchell he was big in the golf race scene in the day and I remember having this very long conversation about his famous golf which had foil and heat shields it looked like sh!t in the bay, BUT the usual everyone had missed the point about performance vs thermodynamics.

i think i may just smooth out the inside of the box and keep standard filter then as i dont want to be replacing another maf unit

Dunc the best combo I've seen and use myself is a RAM scoop mounted at the front and carbon/plastic induction.
The shiny chrome ones looks nice and expensive, but if I put a heat source near it which one would get hotter the metal one or plastic carbon one? Makes you think doesn't it? 
I'm not even a fan of drilled holes on the airbox I've seen holes on both sides and I've said how hot does your block get at full chatt

well ill order a new maf and prob stick with standard box and filter atm, then when i know the maf is working properly and setup correctly then ill look at a RAM scoop, or even the wings that mount in the front big bumper and take a tube up to the air filter box give me some cold air
