Annoying Noise
« on: 04 May 2005, 11:52 »
Hello gentlemen.

Been a while since I last put a post on this board because my car has been running fine - up to now.

The car developed a wheel bearing noise last November so after a while I decided to change both wheel bearings which solved the problem. Job done. Fast forward to March and both front tyres' tread had been scrubbed off on the inside. It seems I altered the alignment when I removed the hub bearing carriers to take them to a local garage to fit the new bearings. (Eurocarparts parts) After having a close look I think I hadn't refitted the bottom balljoint brackets in the correct positions in the wishbones.
Next/current problem was the development of a noise similar to a wheel bearing screech/squeal. I checked the CV joints and one of the inner CV's seemed worn so I changed it. Noise went away but came back. To cut long one short I have changed all four CV joints but the noise remains. Starts at low speed say 10mph and stays the same whether going round bends left or right, in neutral, coasting, braking, all has no effect noise remains but is related to speed. Also checked the gearbox oil. 1 litre came out so I refilled with 2 litres. No difference. What is left to change? Could the wheel bearings be faulty?

Hey ceptor
Yeah putting your bottom ball joint brackets back on in a different position will affect your tracking and camber. Make sure your camber is checked aswell.
As for the screech/squeal have you checked that the caliper carrier bolts are all properly torqued-up?
I put one of my cars into the garage last year for a new wheel bearing and the mechanic was obviously distracted during the job and forgot to do up the bolts holding the caliper on!!! As I drove away a screeching/ringing sound started as soon as I got to about 5mph and just got worse as I went quicker.
After about a mile I pulled over thinking he had bent the splashguard and it was touching the disk but discovered the caliper bolts were hanging by a thread!
Might be worth checking.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Thanks Tobz I'll check that at the weekend although if I had to put money on the problem, which I have , I'd have to go with a damaged or faulty wheel bearing.

A follow up to this problem. Turns out it was the wheel bearing on the near side. It had been slightly damaged when it was fitted, the new bearing must be pressed in square on the outer race only. I took the new bearings and hub carriers to my local VAG garage for them to press in the bearings correctly. Job done - again!
