The way insurance is going you'll be lucky to insure most stuff for less than £2000. Plenty of people I know are paying over £3000 for cars that two/three years ago cost under £2000 to insure. Friend of mine is paying £2400 for a bog standard 1.4 Mk3 golf, he's just passed this last week so.

I had a 1.6 MK3 as a first at 18 and had it lowered.

Was pretty fun, although I'm sure some sort of 1.4 106 would have been far more fun, I liked the solidity of the Golf.

Plus the 1.6 lump made it much faster then all my mates cars, all but one with a Mk4 2l GTI but even then I was off at the lights quicker.

Then you look back and laugh at yourself comparing who has the quickest tortoise.

Was fun though and even though it's a heavy car, lift off oversteer was always an option.

EXPENSIVE first cars to run though. A 1.3 auto Micra = £1500 saving a year.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

When asking about classic insurance a few people said they was like 20 odd and had classic insurance, but for you to get a gti is no chance lol! Just get a any old run around for a year, the cheapest to insure, thats what i done then at 18 got my self a 180bhp a3 tqs  Insurance being £1800. but now with the increases I doubt I'd be ablwe to insure my mk2 gti when it's done unless I get it done on a classic policy

Just get a tiny 1l in something small, nothing you'll get now will be fast anyway lol

Once you have a no claims bonus under your belt then consider a Golf
