To be honest you want to get something ridiculously sh!te first, like Daewoo Kalos, Aveo, Citroen C1, Kia Picanto etc. because lets face it, they are still going to be expensive. Rack up some no claims bonus and then when you are 21ish you will probably be able to afford something nice.

I have a Mk2 Golf 1.3 and im paying over £2000 and I turn 21 next month. Most expensive thing ive ever owned is my insurance premium, second to that is my 500 quid Golf

You don't have to drive like an idiot to crash.
Lack of experience and inability to judge the retardness of other road users would be a main cause, I'd say.

nothing to do with driving like an idiot, i know people who drive like compleate dicks and i refuse to get in a car with them or drive in front or behind them if theres a few of us convoying somewere and they have never crashed, however i know people who drive sensibly who have crashed, i.e my dad rolled a car  7 times down a motorway and spent 2 nights in intensive care about 5 years ago, yet hes one of the most sensible drivers i know.
as said by mitching its other people and lack of experience leading to you geting in over your head that does the damage.

also ide look into the pass plus first, when i passed there was only about 10 companies that gave discount for pass pluss, all quoted me between 200-1k more than other companies, so ide of been paying for the pass pluss and wouldnt have even got any discount.

good luck with finding a car though

This has probably been done a million times but I would like a golf and im not sure which one would be good for a first time driver. It has to be fun and cheap to insure. does any one know which one would be best.

Those two don't normally go together.

Small engined mk2 would probably be the most fun, as they weigh so little.

They are not fun with a small engine. Seem to be too heavy for the 1.3

I'd say to mk2/mk3 polos
:)

^^^^ This

although my first real car (after a very short stint with an MG Metro) was a MK1 golf 1.3.. had loads of fun in that, quite old for a first car now though so be prepared to have to look after it if you can a) find one and b) afford one...
