You could get clever and stick a lower temp kickin switch from a TDI, but as its a driver stick with stock

Where would I get one from a tdi or is it better to stick with a driver one?

Its over kill mate I ran a G60 things got hot, so using a lower temp switch made sense, but just for you knowledge the ones you can use fit a TDI transporter, don't remember the part number, but using VAG they can cross reference the part which is what I did at my local VAG place. You are better off getting decent anti freeze and distilled water in the rad. Even use Holts two part flush before sticking in the new temp switch.
Downside the fan kicks in earlier and longer which means if your fan is old it can shorten its life span just making you aware

I had this happen about 15 years ago in a 1.3 B reg mk2. I was on the motorway - so the cheat in order to get home is take the plug of the back of the radiator (on the right hand side) and put a wire into the first hole and across to the second.

This puts the fan on permanently - so you do need to remember to take the wire out when you park up.

Not ideal - but it got me home.
