I looked at it like this:
((20 + 20) x 0) + 1 = 1

Not that simple..

They were discussing this on radio two yesterday, unfortunately I wasn’t paying any attention, I made it 1 and then checked it on the calculator which also makes it one. I take it that is not the right answer if so please put us out of a misery.

20 + (20 x 0) + 1 = 21

I dont understand why brackets are being added when there were none in the original question, how is the answer not 1?

20+20 is 40, then times 40 by 0 which is 0, then add 1, which makes a total of 1. Is that not correct? This could be fun with some of the smart arses at work

As said just because the brackets are there doesn't mean the rules of mathematics shouldn't be followed..it's not 20+20.....

Regardless of them being there or not, it's always multiples before additions.

Even putting it in to a calculator brings it out as 21.
