Noisy Idle - failing flywheel?

Just after the thoughts of anyone more knowledgeable on the inner workings of the GTI (ie anyone here ) to bounce ideas off.

The golf's increasingly developed a low rattle at idle. At first I thought the foam had shifted from my fuel line rattle, but that wasn't the case.

Then I noticed that the noise fades when I depress the clutch. Does this mean I'm probably looking at a new flywheel, or could there be something simple I'm overlooking (it wouldn't be the first time)?

exactly the same problem for 2 years on mine. I find if its rattling, I put in gear and raise to bite point whilst on the brake, then out of gear and off the pedals and it goes a bit quieter.

Concentric slave cylinder - it's a gearbox out job if it bothers you that much

they do rattle as they get old. Pressing clutch and releasing etc can get it to settle down

replacing means gearbox out so might as well do clutch too !!!

Bugger. Cheers. Slave cylinder seems to come as an all in one with clutch release bearing, so sadly a full clutch job as you say!

It's also developed a more noticeable secondary idle at low revs & gas (such as when pulling away from stationary) which I suspect might be the bearing starting to go too - looks like it's getting to that time...
