Hi,

Basically my 8v AGG won't start following having the cut out problem and not revving past 5000rpm.
I removed the throttle body which was caked in black grime and cleaned that thoroughly, then reassembled it.

I then foolishly got carried away and thought spraying some contact cleaner through the dizzy wouldn't be a bad idea (without seeing if the throttle body clean had worked) as the 5000rpm limiter has occasionally not happened so I assumed it could just be dirty in the distributor. Now the car wont start and I don't know if that is a result of the throttle body clean, or the dizzy.

When turning the engine over I can smell fuel and upon checking the plugs they are getting wet with petrol.

I checked I was still getting a spark which I am, but have no way of telling if its sparking in time.

I have now changed the dizzy cap and plugs and the car still won't start.

Any suggestions? I'm betting on the dizzy being at fault. Does anyone know where I can buy a recon or replacement one that isn't £110 like from VW?

Cheers

did u plug the cam sensor and throttle plug back in?

change the dizzy arm as well.  did u just use carb cleaner?

did u put the plug leads back in the right order?

Thanks for your response,

Rotor arm wasn't in stock, leads looks like they need replacing (slight aluminium oxide corrosion in them) but I'd rather leave replacing them at £25 a set until I've ruled out the really expensive items (distributor)

Unfortunately I did plug everything back in correctly and I'm 100% sure in terms of physical connections everything is fine. The only exception is I didn't use a new throttle body gasket. I am ordering a replacement one for piece of mind but I suspect it is unlikely to be that.

Does a faulty hall sensor/dizzy and faulty throttle plug show up on Vag com?

Has anyone got any info on some multimeter checks I can do on the loom and sensors themselves?

Also does anyone have a wiring diagram?

Thanks very much,

Adrian

what engine is it?  AGG?

Not sure what you could have disturbed really.  The crank sensor would be an obvious no-spark candidate, but you haven't touched that.

yes - depends how faulty though.

The gasket wouldn't stop it starting, nor would anything you've done.  Unless the wiring is broken on the loom to the throttle body I wonder - but a bit out there.

Did you take the rotor off when you cleaned the dizzy?  Could be sparking out of order?

Yes its an AGG, and yes I took the rotor arm off, but like I say I reassembled everything exactly as it was removed, the rotor arm and dizzy cap are keyed on my car so can only go on in 1 position. Tomorrow evening I will remove everything again and triple check but I have double checked already so suspect it has to be electrical. Any ideas on checks I can do with a multimeter?

Thanks for your help,

Adrian

Hi,

I have tried a different throttle body and still get nothing, is there a way to reset the throttle position sensor perhaps?

Thanks

Adrian

yes,  you can do a calibration using vcds (vagcom) on the AGG

i doubt that would cause a non-start though.  if you hold the throttle open when u crank, you eliminate a prob with the motorised part anyway.

vcds would also tell u if the tps was working (live data read)

thanks, a non-ebay vagcom hasn't given me any help at all really. I've tried a different coil on the car now as well and still have nothing, the car just refuses to fire.
