Kick up a fuss mate. Talk to VW UK. Tell them you NEED a hire car. Tell them to open a case and you want it investigating.

On a side note it's almost the same spec at mine, apart from the RNS

as for the reg number; I was told it has to be allocated to a vehicle by March 2012 or I must pay a retainer fee (not sure of cost). Maybe I will get my lovely VW dealer to stump up for that IF i'm still waiting for my GTI

When you buy a private reg you get a year to put it on the new car. If you can't do it within that time frame you can simply extend it for £25 a year.

Ash (welcome btw), they're taking the piss. Stuff retainers and anything else, they should also put on hold any price increases as there's no way they should be taking orders they can't fulfil.
This must be taking the edge off of what should have been a much more satisfying experience, particularly under the circumstances of the funding.

Cheers for the welcome;  When I last spoke to the dealer apart from telling me about "the delay", he also gave me some "good news". As I'd specced leather interior, he informed me that it's now standard on GTI so I'd save over a grand! He was quite pleased to tell me that.....I was quite pissed about the delay.....

My late fathers inheritance is funding the car. Dad would have loved what I'm doing. I've never been in a position to afford a VW let alone a GTI - always had mid range VAuxhalls, Fords etc. He loved riding in my Fiesta Zetec S. Poor old soul ended up with dementure but still laughed his head off every time I went a tadge over 30 round the bends in his village! When I "eventually" get the GTI, I'm gonna BLAST it round every one of those bends, full pelt. Here's to you dad
........thats a nice thought.

Fellas; Took all your advice's, many thanks. Phoned VW cust service today. Was told to get customer order numb from dealer. Did that. Phoned VW back and hey presto;  "There is a global problem with DSG, but I can now see that your car is scheduled for build week 50" (5.12.11)  :grin Not long now then.......

Great news - mine is build week 4 at the mo. I guess yours must have been confirmed for build week 50 as it's close. Be sure to post pics when you get it.

I've been in touch with VW today and informed that the build week has disappeared off the order, it was 201204 and now it's blank, no one knows why but I'm getting fed up of VW and tempted to look elsewhere. Not sure what though!

I have been informed that the delay may be because of my wheels (Monza Shadows) - this was by a Volkswagen UK manager, who spoke to someone in Wolfsburg, but it's still ongoing to get another build week
