my mk3 broke down -lost my spark ): FIXED !
« on: 25 October 2011, 22:27 »
was driving along , in heavy heavy rain . the car gave the impression of running out of fuel .... that juddering then running then cut out then judder and then stopped dead .

i tried to re-start it and the rev's build up slowly and i can smell the fuel .

got out and chacket the dizzy , nice and dry all looks okay , no plugs have fallen off sensors .... nothing obvious . got it back home got a ht lead off . bam , no spark.

fuse's inside the car are all okay but un-sure where the other bay fuse's are on the 1.4 AEX .

so ive got no spark , i replaced the dizzy cap and arm 20K ago because it gave me these problems before but the plug fell out the back of the ignition barrel . but thats okay this time .

has anyone got any experiences or ideas on what this is ?

Yes, common fault on Mk3 could be other things but they do go funny real quick when they start to break down.

Replace the coil. Mine did the same and it turned out to be the coil. You can buy a used one for £10-£20 like I did but as with mine it lasted only a handful of months. Eventually I splashed out £80 for a new coilpack from the RAC (but genuine VW) and that included 12 months warranty, been perfect since

Could be crank sensor mine went recently with similar symptoms. Would see if you could borrow a coil first to rule that out tho.

I had this Monday. Had to get a Taxi to work, but got let off work to go and sort it (boss is awsome!) so went back about 2 hours later, and it started first time. I suspected coil/dizzy/leads and I had spares of all these but obviously were'nt needed. Dont rule out the dizzy just cos it looked dry, and was replaced what is actually quite a while ago now. The slightest bit of moisture inside could have a big effect on its performance. They're less than a tenner anyway, so may well be worth swapping it about to rule it out.
