thanks,

DAY 5.

no photos today, but i managed to strip the cams down and the dizzy. they look ok.
overhauled the steering pump (by this i mean strip it down and realise it was a bad idea its a b!tch to reassemble.)
rest of the day was spent cleaning the gearbox and the clutch housing.

oh and i did the last polish on the intake manifolds, looks nice.

i may take some leave this week to squeeze day 6 in before the weekend :)

EDIT: checked under the sills and apart from a repair, she is gleaming underneath, (looks like its been wax oiled previously)

all arrived today, apparently i ordered the wrong head gasket set.

advertised as an Gti 2.0 16v ABF engine but i think i must have the later engine type. i dont know how much of it differs from the later model engine, i may have to sharp knife some of the "grooves" around the cam cover gasket.

This may set me back somewhat with the engine re-build. im not a happy bunny

edit: being sent back, steel set ordered - hope i dont make the similar mistakes again...

cyl head removed and cleaned, come up quite nice. dont think anyone wants to see a picture of a cylinder head or head so i wont post them.

looks like there is a fine crack in my downpipes, so that will need a weld :(

Oil Sump came off yesterday too, couldn't get the sump plug out so had to resort to drastic measures.

while the engine was this far stripped down i was going to check the clutch, but according to the master that is haynes, i need specalist tools to pressurize the clutch. so i think i will leave well alone for now.

pleased to say that its coming along nicely and i am learning heaps. enginework is great and all that, but im more interested in trying some bodywork mods.

there are some nice ideas on the forums which i may rob :) *(just very badly)

day 5/6 (3rd weekend)

approx 75 hours in and im starting the engine rebuild, wih new gaskets and a new set of belts. (omg the timing and aux belt was a SOB to remove, trashed 2 socket handles getting it off!!)

spray painted the engine loom holder and the oil cooler black, along with the various other brackets and trays.

I havent taken apart the pistons, con rods, crank, valves or clutch. i think these are beyond my current abilities and tooling.

once its all back together i will take some photos.

showed some progress to the guy who sold me the car for £100, he is

So my new steel gasket set arrived today and it's still the wrong one. Looking on the engine block it's not 03****** but 05***** so I am going to have to grovel to the supplier and see if I can get a refund.

I can not seem to find the correct gasket set. Would love some advise. If anyone knows the right part number for a 2.0 Gti 16v abf engine with the engine number at 05**** I would be grateful :D

Edit: Found the part (maybe) on Euro car parts, looks like i need to shell out another £30 on top!!
