CADDY 1600 CARB TO 1800 GTI ENGINE SWAP

I NEED HELP!!!! I'M SWAPPING THE ENGINE IN MY MATES CADDY AND I NEED HELP. THE CADDY ENGINE WAS A 1600cc CARB'd ENGINE AND I'M FITTING AN ENGINE FROM A 89 GOLF GTI 8V. WE'VE DECIDED THAT RATHER THAN TACKLE THE INJECTION WIRING WE'D FIT TWIN WEBERS, 40'S OR 45'S. I HAVE VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF ENGINES SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT COMBINATION OF THE 2 ENGINES TO USE. 1800 BLOCK, 1600 HEAD? IF I USE THE INJECTION HEAD HOW DO I BLANK THE INJECTOR HOLES? THE MAIN ISSUE IS WHAT PARTS I WILL NEED FOR THIS CONVERSION AND WHERE TO SOURCE THEM, IE FUEL PUMPS, REGULATORS, WHAT JETS TO USE, WHAT CARBS??? IS FITTING THE CARBS A WISE MOVE? ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, CHEERS BOYS.

If you use the injection head, I'm sure you can leave the injectors in there to blank the holes. Do you have the 89 Golf GTI vehicle as a donor car? That will make life a lot easier if you have.

i HAVE STILL GOT THE CAR ON THE DRIVE. THINK THE NEIGHBOURS ARE BEGINNING TO LOVE IT! I THOUGHT ABOUT USING THE INJECTORS BUT THESE HAVE A HOLE RIGHT THE WAY THROUGH SO I'D PROBABLY HAVE TO USE THE WHOLE RACK AND BLANK THAT SOMEWHERE. I WAS WONDERING IF THE PRESSURE WOULD BLOW THEM OUT THOUGH AS THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ANYTHING TO HOLD THEM IN THE HOLE? ALTHOUGH OBVIOUSELY IT DOESN'T DO IT NOW.

No it won't blow the injectors out as they are upstream of the valves. If anything, its the opposite and they get sucked in.

i thought the injectors went into the inlet manifold.. which when removed (to fit carbs) wont be there anyway???

or am i getting confused with a different 8v??

NO, ON THIS ENGINE THEY GO DIRECTLY INTO THE HEAD. NOT SURE HOW OTHERS WORK BUT THATS DEFINATELY THE CASE WITH THIS ONE.

must be a k jet then??? (mechanical fuel injection) i think im getting it mixed up with a digifant....

 :laugh:

to block the holes, id remove the injectors, drill out to the nearest thread size, then tap accordingly and loctite a grub screw or bolt in...

Hmmmmmm, I'm going to have to have a look now. I'm certain whether it is k-jet or digifant, makes no difference you can leave the injectors/injector rail in, in both cases they go into the head, not the inlet manifold. I'll have to double check that :huh:

OK MATE, SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN. I'LL BLANK EACH INJECTOR INDIVIDUALLY TO KEEP IT MINIMAL IN THE ENGINE BAY. SO I'LL BE USING THE 1800 BLOCK AND HEAD AND THEN SLAP ON A PAIR OF 40'S OR 45'S. I'LL BE PUTTING IN AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP TO UP THE PRESSURE. DO THESE RUN CONTINUOUSELY OR WILL I NEED A REGULATOR TO SWITCH IT ON/OFF DEPENDING ON PRESSURE? I'M ALSO WONDERING WHETHER I CAN KEEP THE 1600 COIL AND USE THAT? WILL IT BE UP TO THE JOB? CAN ANYBODY POINT OUT ANYTHING TO ME THATS NOT BLATANTLY OBVIOUS AS I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. CHEERS FOR THE HELP BOYS, HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ABLE TO GIVE IT BACK SOME DAY.
