When do you get back from Afghan? The reason I ask, is that I bought a bike for the commute to work in summer last year, and it was great for a few months. As soon as winter came (which was especially harsh) it sat in the garage until March as I couldnt bear freezing my tits off! You cant just jump on and go either, fannying about putting your leathers on is a pain in the arse!

Get back in Jan mate, I have no issues with throwing all the kit on, I have had to do it for 2 years when I was younger, I went from swansea to blackpool on a 4 stroke 125cc in December so I know about being cold. I really aint too worried. I cycle the 6 miles to work at the moment so used to being out in all conditions.

get it re-stricted to 33bhp an you can drive it as long as you have done a cbt
Is that right?
when I did my test I was told I could ride up to a 125 on a cbt,
if I passed my test on a 125 I could ride any bike providing it was restricted to 33bhp
and if I passed my test on a 500 I could ride any bike unrestricted.. I went for option this option

@bored_welsh_lad my tip would be to go through Direct Access once you have done your theory test...

No I think that hes wrong on that one, and yes I will be going the DA route don't you worry!! Insurance quote of 237..Full of win!!!

A moped has a maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (approx. 31 miles per hour). It has an engine up to 50 cubic centimetres (cc). A learner motorcycle has an engine up to 125 cc and a power output not exceeding 11 kiloWatt (kW)

Full motorcycle licence
The practical test must be taken on a bike of between 75 cc and 125 cc. There are two types of full motorcycle licence:
a light motorcycle licence (A1), which restricts riders to any bike up to 125 cc and a power output of 11 kW
a standard motorcycle licence (A), is obtained if the practical test is taken on a bike of over 120 cc but not more than 125 cc and capable of at least 100 kilometres per hour (km/h per hour)..
After passing the standard motorcycle practical test, you will be restricted for two years to riding a bike of up to 25 kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16 kW/kg. After this you may ride any size of bike.
Note:
The BMW C1 motorcycle is not a suitable machine for a practical test.

as soon as im 21 and insurance goes down to a respectable amount. first thing im doing is test then start saving for a cheep bike :)

I admire his hope for cheap insurance really I do. I'm 25 in a few months and I seriously doubt it's going to do much for me. Currently I have 2.0 mr2 turbo full comp at £700.
Licence for three years and 1yrs no claims

Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI 4 years no claims with 10 years licence, 820 notes pal.. Shopped around like hell, I think the whole concept of my "job" doesn't help me and puts me into high risk catagory.

sounds like mine, going up a hill on the back wheel then when I leaned over my mates shoulder on a straight we were doing 145, welcome to the world of bikes

He hated me on the back cos I was too stiff and kept trying to fight the leaning on the corners. I was a better pillion after I passed my test and had been riding a few months
