figures dont mean jack on a 14+ year old car! im pretty sure the 0-60 is quicker in a 16v, then after that the 8v takes over, but thats obvious. this is getting out of hand anyway. to end all of this, my mk3 hasnt been ragged, i can tell. Rant over!

Calm down   look at what your mk4 weighs with 115bhp against the mk3 with 150bhp of course it is quicker.

The bigger problem comes when you want to make it quicker, getting more power out an ABF is not cheap or easy.

A few of the mk3 boys got the eBay EPROMs instead of the crap resistors. It's a generic map so not the best, but added about 5 bhp with a decent torque curve and improved economy from what I can remember. Think they were about £50 with a best offer and I think it was khare who got one for £35. Not bad IMO.

I'd have thought the 8v's have been raggged more as the 16v and VR's don't need to be ragged to get anywhere.

That is where you are wrong fella :nerd:

all 3 need to be ragged to get the best from them, VR and 16v more so.. iv owned all 3..

16v really are not fast tho, only just faster than the 8v..  but thats just from my personal exp and i think the old 8v lump that used to be in my car must have been a healthy one..

anyhow crack on guys

I fitted an ebay eprom to mine about 12 months ago, cost me £40 and can tell you i would not put the original back in,didnt gain to much in the bhp department but power delivery was definatly smoother and what i found was it gave me about 4-5 mpg extra

lol id never buy an ebay special part to my engine, its all made by 12 year olds in thailand

As said, they do work, just because it's sold on ebay doesn't make it dodgy  Nothing else you do will make much difference anyway, unless ya going to spend hundreds.

:undecided: So you would sooner risk your engine on a ebay chip than a proper remap that has years of research and work to get right.

My experence of ebay chips is that most of them in the end cause damage, I would never use one or recommend them to anyone.

The only eBay chip I've had anything to do with was on a Mk4 Tdi on the most recent RR day at Carbon Chiptuning. Car should have been 115bhp standard and was actually around 135bhp and had very nice power/torque curves. It did however leave a big sooty mark on the floor and filled the garage with black smoke
