Crazy fuel consumption on my GTI
« on: 07 October 2011, 19:07 »
Hoping someone can help, from £20 of shell VPower I'm lucky to get 60 miles. This is less than I got from my old Type R when driven hard. Driving home today from work which is around 5.5miles. I drove under 3.5K RPM all the way with no hard acceleration and according to the trip computer I got 19.1MPG..... How can this be right?

The cars stock and fully serviced up to date by VW!

Got no idea what's going on and VPower costing over £1.40 a litre it ain't cheap

Is this town driving?
around town i would get 20-25mpg, especially if it is short journey's of short duration.
On a long haul, i can get 35mpg easily.
If you want economy around town, maybe get a small diesel car ;-)

Yes it's town driving but under 20mpg is ridiculous considering I'm driving like a granny, if I give it some hard acceleration it will easily drop below the 15mpg Mark which can't be right? Any other GTI owner I've spoke to says they get around 30mpg town driving

It's pretty obvious tho even around town I shouldn't be getting such bad mpg

I wouldn't get near 30 mpg at 20 miles an hour so I don't know who has told you this and I wouldn't reach 3500 rpm either at that speed.
I've been a target for 'halfords spec' saxos for almost three years now!

Your mpg sounds correct.... Short journeys fella, you will not see a return above 20mpg if your doing such short journeys.

Remember your mpg on your dashboard starts at around 4-5 mpg from starting your journey, and only starts climbing slowly the longer your trip is..

I do 20 miles to work and back each day. With a couple of longer journeys circa 50 to 70 miles on weekdays. Plus perhaps one 40 mile journey and several 3 or 4 mile journeys at the weekend. I do approx 800 miles a month. My average mpg is 30.

To be fair I do drive steady on the motorway, but otherwise I do enjoy a bit of pedal to metal action nearly every day!

Sounds about right, whoever told you they managed 30mpg driving a GTI round town is probably named Pinnochio.  If you are only ever making short journeys then if I was you I wouldn't waste the money on V-Power, putting the best fuel in the car and then using it around town is just pointless.

15 mike trip to work and I average 39mpg - mix of 50mph lanes and about a mile of queuing traffic. Average around 34-35 in total according to the car trip anyway.
