contemplating 20 valves for 8 valve gti
« on: 06 October 2011, 23:20 »
been offerd  another bloody golf with a fked motor. but think i may have this one and do something with it the question is what

i'm thinking 20 valves but whats bothering me is do i do the straight forward conventional 20vt swap, or try and put the 20vt in a mk2 that i've allways wanted to have a crack at doing ( the 5 cylinder )
i can see the 5 cyl is going to be a right twit to fit into the mk2,  need to make mounts, possobly adapter to get g box on, serious adjustments to chassi legs, make driveshafts and lots of exhaust related stuff.  but the noise of an I5 20vt is much better than any vr6 imo and i recon it should go some

so is 5 cyls likely to be  worth the ballache ?
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I think he on about the 5cyl 20v Audi lump.. Same engine iirc 034 motorsport had in their mk4 which could push depending on turbo 600-1200 bhp..

I think you should give it a go if you can access a decent engine and box and loom etc..

If you do please start a build thread

Danny, I think back in the deep mists of time I think we visited some workshop in Basingstoke with the delightful Mr Ghia.

In the corner there was a G2 having a 5-banger transplant.

It was way too wide to go across, so they were butchering it about something rotten to make it fit.

I think it would be possible - after all there's a Northstar V8 Golf2 out there.  I think it would make a lovely noise, but the thing is, I think you'll lose the Golf-ness of it - it becomes just another 'shadow car' with a load of stuff welded into what could be any shell.

This would apply especially if you switched to N/S mounting of the motor.

The only circumstance this would be acceptable would be if you were building a RWD Golf, with an ABF, manual gearbox behind it and Syncro rear end.

That would be a far more nonsensical and worthwhile project.

RWD and spaceframed is the only way to do this properly . None of this cutting and shutting of the chassis, just cutout and drop on .

This is the loss of Golf-ness I was talking about.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
