Hi Guys... Don't normally pop this high up the golf numbers as I'm a true MK2 Lover...

But I'm looking at buying a 2006 Mk5 GTI with a DSG box with 72K next weekend...

Do you have any tips as to what to look for when testing one...

Do they have an Achilles Heel??? How reliable is the DSG??

MK2's it's rust, rust & rust... :laugh:

my car has DSG with 136k and no problems whatsoever  :wink:

Good all round car just check like anything else if it sounds dodgey ask them to fix it  :grin:

If its clunky going into gear then it could be that it needs a service or the mechatronics unit is failing

Give it a good proper drive and make sure it moves up and down the box smoothly.  If the unit is failing it tends to jump out of gear i.e from 6th to like 3rd  :shocked:

Ask the owner if it has been serviced (think VW recommends every 40K??) and if the mechantronics unit has been replaced

If you get favourable answers to both then enjoy  :smiley: It's a cracking bit of kit and launch control is excellent  :evil:

As above. Also i think it's worth asking when the last time the dsg box had a service and weather the mechatronic control module has been replaced under waranty. Other than that all the usual stuff.

Prone to failure  :sad:  and they are the thick end of £1000..........

Later units seem to be more reliable  :smiley:

Check the top of the front arch for bubbling as sometimes rust can pop up there. I have a 2006 and it hasn't happened to me, seems more common on 2005 models.

i think the mechatronic unit is more like £2200 fitted  :shocked:
