yeah thats why I need to confirm an ET50 16" wheel won't have clearance issues (with the callipers etc)

as far as i can find 18" monza shadows are ET50 anyway so there shouldn't be an issue hopefully

ok found that the recommended winter tyre size is

6 x 16  5 x 112.00 x 57.00 ET: 50.00 5-hole steel wheel

so the wheels I'm buying from the breakers are fine (hopefully!)

Those Monza's look good in gloss black. I'd be interested to see what they look like on your car.

Heres what was/is an option from the factory

As said above 16" steel wheels will fit the GTI (with standard brakes) and were even a winter option from the factory and still are for the mk6.

Räder / Reifen - Winterräder (zusätzlich) *
   Winterräder (zusätzlich) 4 Stahlräder 6 J x 16 Winterreifen 205/55 R 16
  615,00 €
Wheels / Tires - Winter wheels (additional) *
    Winter wheels (additional) 4 steel wheels 6 J x 16 winter tires 205/55 R 16
   â‚¬ 615.00

The R/R32 had optional winter 17s which are narrower than the standard alloys

Räder / Reifen - Winterräder (zusätzlich) *
   Winterräder "Meribel" (zusätzlich) 4 Leichtmetallräder 6 J x 17 Winterreifen 205/50 R 17
  1.000,00 €

Steels with hubcaps(look better without imo)

And if you don't wish to change tyres between summer and winter months, best to use winter cold weather tyres all year round. This is the opinion of all the tyre manufacturers. Makes sense?

Just won the last wheel to complete my set of winter alloys,  bought a full set of oem Monza in 18",  2 are in need of a mild refurb but am considering having all 4 done replacing the polished front with a hyper silver,  my winter tyres are sitting in the garage ready for use.

On the other hand if I leave them polished they will be worth more come resale time,  what do you think ?

I can't recommend winter tyres highly enough,  had a set on the wifes BMW 320D last winter and the car was virtually unstoppable

Are your 18" wheels Monza Shadows?

I think keeping them with machined fronts makes them look tastier and therefore more valuable. I personally don't like a painted Monza as it looses all its charm and looks very dull and heavy.
However, a machined Monza is more prone to the dreaded white worm especially with winter usage.

I wonder what opinion Exonian has on this subject. He's very wheel orientated.

And right on cue ...

Well, if you're just going to run winters on them you may as well get rid of the ringworm prone polished finish and have them painted anthracite.
If you're going to use the wheels in summer you really need to keep the wheels with the polished face as it looks amazing in sunlight. It also looks amazing under certain streetlighting too.

So a set of polished for summer and a set of grey for getting covered in salt would be the ideal situation in my not particularly humble opinion.
