Winter Wheels and Tyres
« on: 27 September 2011, 14:35 »
Hi Guys

Sorry I've not been on here much recently - holidays, work and just generally busy mean I get little time to contribute but I have managed to dip in and out for my fix!

A question for those more experienced than me in all matters relating to winter wheels as I am going to get myself sorted soon - hopefuly by the end of October.

I have read through the 'epic' thread from last year but wnated to get your opinions on actual usage and living with your current set up as well as thoughts on the options I feel I have: -

For the tyres I have narrowed it down to either the

Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme 16"=£116; 17"=£149 (both excluding fitting)
Continental WinterContact 830P 16"= £103; 17"=£167 (both excluding fitting)

(probably from www.mytyres.co.uk)

Option 1
16" Steel Wheels
Cheapest option but as I plan to have these on the car November to March I'm not sure I could live with them
Total Cost £700 inc fitting

Option 2
16" Alloys - OEM wheels such as these (could sell the tyres on for a small payback)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170697795824?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Total Cost £950 inc fitting

Option 3
17" Alloys - OEM Wheels such as these from a Mk5 GT (Same 5 x 112 fitment)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140610871213?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Total Cost c.£1000

Option 4
17" Alloys - OEM Wheels such as these from a GTi but bearing in mind my car is the GTD!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180728575905?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Total Cost c.£1100

Option 5
After Market Alloys - brand new with Winter Tyres
http://www.wheelbasealloys.com/17_Inch_ZCW_Grace_SC_Alloy_Wheels_with_225_45_17_HR_Vredestein_Wintrac_Xtreme__P968_1910
Total Cost £1050

Thoughts and advice please....

17" OEM wheels, or good aftermarket wheels, Vredestein Wintrac Extreme tyres...on in October through to March...looks good, works well, job done.

Make it so.

BTW, I especially like the Mk5 GT 'Classix' wheels...and those with a set of 225/45/17 tyres on would look OEM enough to run for 5 months and be very happy with the look of your car.

Agree with Ess_Three.

*17". I went bigger to 18" as my standard wheels are 18".

Alloys: Use the ones you have or good after market ones. I went aftermarket.

Tyres: Goodyear UltraGrip 8, Vredestein Wintrac Extreme tyres or Michelin Pilot Sport PA3 tyres in 225/45 R17 94V/W XL. Latter tyres my preference on 18" wheels for their W rating, though unnecessarily expensive. The Goodyears are the most modern of this group of three and probably the best.

16" wheels: Go for the Goodyear UltraGrip 8 on steel rims. You'll get amazing grip but be embarrassed by the looks.

I'm going with 205/55/16 91H - one of the recommended winter sizes in the workshop manual. And 4 VW alloys from a local breakers.

I want Ultra grip 8 tyres, but having difficulty getting them.

I managed to get 4 17" Monzas off gumtree for £120, a bit scuffed but easily tidied up.

Just fitted them with Dunlop Winter Sport 4D.

Probably be the mildest winter for 100 years this year..

Thanks for the advice so far

@Asker - I'm definitely not going to swap the tyres over onto my existing rims as I don't want to inflict any damage on them or have the inconvenience - I have the luxury of being able to store a spare set so I cna then swap back and forth when I want.  Also I think 18" will look nice but they will compromise the traction/gain from the winter tyres so 17" is my maximum ;)

@Ess_Three - I think the Classix are my preferred choice - coupled with the Vredestein's - seems a good package without compromising the looks or benefits.

@Daz / @mike. - I've had a look locally but nothing that is cheap without a reason :(

...the search continues

They don't...I ran 225/40/18 Vredestein Wintrac Extremes last winter and they were epic.
A 225 wide 18" winter tyre is no worse than a 225 wide 17" tyre...it's the compound that matters.
Of course the higher sidewall gives better protection on the 17"s...even more so with 16s.

If you want SERIOUS winter performance, then a 205 wide 16" wheel/trye is the way to go...but having gone through last winter on decent 18" winter tyres, I never felt I was lacking in grip.

^^^

Thanks for clarifying Glen.  Thining about it, it's the footprint that matters - 225 is 225 whether on a 17 or an 18 - I thnk 17's will still look decent wihtout breaking the bank.

I'd personally go for the 17'' Monzas, pick a cheapish set up (there are usually a few sets knocking around for sensible money except when you're actually looking for a set - a wanted ad will be your easiest option as a lot of people chuck them in the garage when they've upgraded to 18s and never get round to advertising them) as the Monzas are really easy to clean and look good on the Golf.

Then again if it's going to get cold enough to warrant winter wheels and tyres the things are going to be covered in salt and road filth most of the time if you do big miles so a set of 16'' steelies are strong and cheap and will take the knocks.
I skidded a works van into a kerb last year on sheet ice, I was only doing about 5 mph before the downhill skid but sped up thanks to the inertia. It was a Ford Connect with steel wheels which took the bump very well and there was barely a mark to the lip of the rim. It sounded like a bomb going off from inside the cab and I thought the wheel and tyre would have been destroyed.
I jumped out and skidded around to the side of the van prepared for the worst only to find the tyre still fully inflated and the wheel looking dandy. No steering knocked out from centre or anything thanks to the big sidewall of the tyre which took the impact. 9 months plus later and the same van has the same wheel and tyre and still fine. An alloy wheel would have been destroyed by that impact I reckon going from the impact noise.
So 16'' steelies are the sensible option.

I'd still go for 17'' Monzas. Happy compromise.
