Newby needs help ! No power!

Wotcha - I'm a real newby when it comes to car audio.
Hope you can help - it's probably a stupid problem, but I've got no idea what to do.

Have bought a golf gti (2000) Love the car, but having problems with the stereo. I removed the manufacturers radio, which was working fine, to replace with my sony cd player that worked fine in my old golf.

When I took out the cd player from my old car I found that the guy who installed it had cut the red wire and soldered it to the yellow one.
(Apparently this is something to do with the memory??)

Anyway, it didn't work in the new car... no power.

I replaced the fuse at the back of the cd player & bought a replacement 16 pin wiring loom, thinking that the prev cables might be damaged, but the same problem occurs.

No power seems to be getting to the cd player. the display doesn't light up etc.

I don't really want to have to pay someone to install it as I'm hoping it's a simple issue and I want to learn how to do things like this myself... any ideas??

Is there a seperate fuse somewhere else in car? The 'fuse box' at the side of the dash seems fine, but the display card doesn't show if a if/where there should be a fuse for the stereo.

Any help would be really appreciated.

have you checked there is power getting to the joined red and yellow wires?

just for referance
Yellow is permanantly live
Red is ignition live
Black is earth

Hello chaps, another sort of new one to the whole ice setup malarky.

Just bought a Golf yesterday,a '94 Golf Match 1.4 (irrelevent). I took out the stock cd player and wired an ISO block onto the original wires, matched colour for colour. It was working alright, except there was no memory when the ignition was switched off, so no radio stations were saved, and the cd got spit out every time the engine was turned on. Any help with that??

Also, got in the car today, player was working fine, up untill it just shut off. Now there's no power getting through at all, and someone else's bloody cd is it it! I've checked the wires behind, nothing's come loose, I just don't know what to do.

Probably wasn't the best thing to do, tackling it myself, but I do hate driving in silence. Surely one of you dude can help me out? After all, it is your passion, and possibly soon to be mine. 


Edit - Found These on sale[/u] (Sony XS 1723's), and first off I was wondering if they're any good, and if they'll work as a replacement for my old 6x9's? I don't fancy cutting holes in my parcel shelf again..
Second of all, I was wondering if they'd fit in the door panels after I move the factory speakers?

If they do fit, and they're decent, then I'll bag 'em. Free Postage!

Found out a little more since my original question.
replaced the relevant fuses and cd player worked, but same issue with memory & cd's getting spat out!
If the cd player suddenly stipped it's probably a fuse issue.

I've been told that the red wire should be soldered to the yellow wire (constant supply?) but I don't fancy messing about with it myself - so having to pay £20 for someone else to do it.

Probably a bit of waste of cash, but don't want to risk frying any more leads.

don't waste your money on the mk4 if your fitting a sony on the the original wiring block all you need to do is swap the red and yellow wires around had the same prob on mine they don't need to be joined. you probably had no power in the first instance cos the ignition was off

ok heres what i did- really simple

remove original radio you will be left with the factory block that was in the orig radio. if your sony is not too old and hasn't been tampered with the block on the end of the sony wiring should fit striaght onto the factory block in the car. all you need to do is cut though the 2 wires (when not connected) then either crimp then or get a little joing block swapping the red and yellow over so they are both going sepaeratly to the sony. the reason is the live wires in the golf are back to front.
if you use blocks tape over the screw heads to avoid blowing any fuses

Evening all.. back again after sorting out my player. Feel like a proper f**kwit now after finding out all that was needed was two wires joined. With red and yellow joined now, it stays on all the time, even with no ignition. If I join red to yellow and vice versa, will it switch off when the ignition is turned off? Just curious...

Also, I got those 16.5cm Xplods, and they're not really what I wanted them to be (In the front door pods). They sound alright, but they're nothing against the ol 6x9's I had in my old Polo shelf, any suggestions on making them sound better? The head unit I have (Kenwood somethingorother) is rated at 4x45w, will that be enough to power the 2 door speakers and 2 6x9's set up in the boot or parcel shelf? I don't fancy shelling out for an amp or anything.

Plus I need to buy an .mp3 HU too, so saving up for that really.. Any suggestions anyone?



Oh yeah, one more thing.. A bit off topic, but not important enough to go in a new thread.. What's the biggest size wheel I can get without having to do any arch work at all? And how will a bigger wheel affect the handling etc of the car?
