take a bolt out and measure it against a standard one. I'm with wayne on this one if the bolts are too long it flicks the abs ring and sounds like a rattle.

I bought extra bolts, just under 20mm longer than standard to bolt the wheel & spacer to the hub.

Is that the most secure way to do it or would I be better bolting the spacer to the hub first then bolting the wheel to the spacer?

as long as they're torqued correctly that is structurally more sound than bolt-on types.

I really don't understand why im having this problem.

Will any 5 x 100 spacers be ok or does it have to be a certain type for the mk4?

You shouldnt need longer bolts if your using bolt on spacers, the bolts aren't nipping the alloy to the spacer from sounds of it, whilst wheel is in air and nuts are tight can you check wheel is secure? Push and pull top of wheel.

from experiance you will need to remove the hub nut cover in centre of rear wheels
it won't allow the spacer to sit down fully on hubs

i've had your prob before
