Macintosh was their first proper home computer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh
I will always have PCs and laptops in my home because my job revolves around them, microsoft based servers and Linux. However I am fool on the personal application side of things as I agree on the performance comment in many cases. I have a home studio totally based on rack mounted PCs... Not clever and not common these days but I simply cannot afford to go mac in this area for now.
For MIDI based music production I still miss my Atari 1040 as this was a very robust studio machine that's operating system was very similar to that of the orignal Mac.
I was been sarcastic regarding the macintosh lol.. im a DJ and i go way back to the late 80s in regards to my music collection and have many friends who were big back in the day.. Dream Frequency etc etc...
i use cubase, and acid, recently got ableton. nothng beats analog tho

when reliability and performance is paramount a Mac is the only option. id never ever trust a PC in a live situation and i think every professional shares this opinion, although its lost speaking about this stuff on here where the most many people do is browse this site (PC is fine for that)
even all the printing companys use Apple mac...
its only offices that use PC
i hear you on cost tho. they are very £££££
