Clutch options - Remapped TDi
« on: 19 September 2011, 19:00 »
Hello all.

Who has what?

Is it worth going down the route of the oem kit and replacing the friction plate?

Does the cover plate need to be uprated too?

Thanks
Ian

Its the cover plate which looses the claping force, you can put an brand new oem friction plate in there only to find is will slip with the added torque.

All we do is fit brand new OEM friction & pressure plates to customer cars and on the 130/150bhp are good for over 340lbft.

What bhp TDI engine do you have, how many miles and what power are you looking at going for?

Nick

it's a 2002 150pd and has 69k on clock and i'm guessing original clutch.

It has an upsolute map on and it's been tweaked to be as smooth as possible
(knowing how agressive the pd's can be) the torque has been reduced at the lower revs to make it more linear
in it delivery. It feels lovely when it's behaving. It's not pushed as far as it could be as i don't like the smoke
and want to keep drivability in wet

The clutch doesn't always slip. It seems to be very sporadic and more so if accelerating
up the box like onto a motorway. So your theory fits,

When it's been running a while the is no slip at all. But when playing up from 3rd gear upwards and always
between 2300 and 2500 revs.

I would only ever fit LUK or SACHS anyway if i went OEM route and with forum discount the
kits are quite good value.

Is that what you fit? Is it worth changing the DMF and concentric slave too?

Just as well change the whole lot whilst its apart although the DMF may be ok  :undecided:

Standard clutch will be fine on a stage 1 map; anything more will require something a little bit better

DMF is £200 +............

I don't plan to go beyond the stage 1 map. It's my daily and whole point of selling my beloved mk2 16V was
fuel economy and reliability

Labour to change the DMF after you've replaced the clutch = £150+ and upwards

Depends if you like having the gearbox swapped out or not

I stuck an LUK DMF back in when I did my clutch and 35K later is was rattling again  :lipsrsealed: so try and go Sachs

i'd prefer SACHS anyway

my last 130pd clutch was changed for SACHS oem after remap and was no bother for the nest 50k miles
and that was with original DMF too.

A lot of it depends on what sort of life the car has led previously; some go on for the life of the car; others go in the blink of an eye  :undecided:
