Cambelt change?
« on: 14 September 2011, 16:32 »
Just had a call from main dealer. 57 plate Edition 30 with 46k on the clock. They're telling me the cambelt needs changing and they have an offer on at £289. Firstly, in your experience, is it due a change for the age and mileage...and secondly, is it possible/cheaper to get it done elsewhere other than a dealer,or is that a fair price? Thanks for your feedback.

That's not a bad price!
Can I suggest you ask for your water pump to be replaced at the same time as, if unchanged, tend to fail shortly after replacing the cam belt.

£289 is a good price but check what your getting for that. i work for audi and its £349 for the same job and all you get is a cambelt and tensioner, waterpump is additional they are recommended to be replaced at either 80k or 4 years if it was my car id replace the cambelt as a kit and waterpump because you only want to be in there once.

Just echoing what others have said. Make sure you get the waterpump done aswell. Shouldn't add much more as it will only be additional parts.

There have been threads on here before about the cambelt.

Your handbook says 120,000 (I think).

I got mine changed recently on my 05 plate with 60k at a cost of £329 so the price you were given is good.

I reckon you're due a new timing belt about now as you're coming up on 4 years. As others have said, best getting the waterpump done at the same time.

I bought an 07 Gti with 23K miles last week. The book says timing belt at 120K miles with no mention of time. A bit of browsing and I soon realised the timing belt should be done at 4 years or 60K miles - whichever comes first. I had a full timing belt kit and waterpump change on Monday for £300, which I though was a fair price. I got quotes from 3 VW/Audi indies and they varied from £300 up to £380. Main dealer wanted £399. One indy gave a price but advised that timing belt change wasn't due until 5 years / 75K miles, so seems to be some difference of opinion.

At four years, you're also looking at a brake fluid change, and a major service: oil + filter, air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs... I'm getting my service done on Monday for £198 at the same indy that did the timing belt. Brake fluid was done at same time as timing belt for £36.
