I always think that cabs are hard to price up, I always find it easier to see the price and then decide whether I would pay that for it or not, so what's it up for ? It's certainly got low mileage and it's a late(ish) one, do you know if it's got a power hood ? I can't comment about the autos though as I know nothing what so ever about them but I'd always go for a manual but your wife might like the auto.  :undecided: I'd be concerned about the rattle in the engine though it shouldn't rattle for more than a second or so when it first fires up, if it's taking longer than that then I'd be cautious. Also, a bearing on the price would be what model is it, i.e. GTI or Clipper ?

Mine hasn't got central locking or power steering and mines supposed to be the top of the range standard mk1 cab so I wouldn't worry about that.  What's the price on it ? Is it a GTI or a clipper ? :undecided:

ok so I look at the auto and manuals in this view - having had both types over the years.

Auto - if you have problems with the auto box it's going to cost alot more than a manual box - so check out when any service was done on the auto box.

Pricing - auto's are usually a bit cheaper than manual's as everyone wants manuals, but the auto's always seem to be in better condition - engine wise - but if your hearing noises - I would take someone who knows about engines with you for a second viewing to find out what that is - as you don't want to be paying more money out on car you've just bought.

If you can give more details of the spec of golf I'll give you a idea of price - mileage is key part and service history.

Also on Auto box's your in the lower gearing more than manual and thus your spend more money on petrol.

ok - you need to check what services have been done on the car and what parts have been replaced. PVC hoods don't last very long - so look out for the signs at front of hood - above doors - make sure it's not leaking water in - check carpets and front edges of seats.

Are you going to visit it again with someone who can help you find out what the noise is from the engine area?

I'd go in at 1300 and that way they properly go 1500 you say 1400, then they say 1450 you say 1425 - and hopefully if all is ok you got yourself a car...... - never pay the asking price.

Make sure you read this thread also - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=18122.0
